GIVE THANKS. You can increase your chances of good luck in the coming Year of the Rat by giving thanks and making preparations for the Chinese New Year on January 31. But note that those born on the Year of the Rat should do this on January 30.
CLEAN HOUSE. Out with the old, in with the new! Give away what you don't need; donate your excess to charity, or dispose of what doesn't work.
BATHE IN POMELO LEAVES (huh!?). Boil pomelo leaves in water and let it cool. Take a bath right before midnight on the eve of the Chinese New Year, then use the pomelo leaf water as your final bath rinse.
CUT IT OFF. Get a haircut in the fifteen (15) days leading up to the Chinese New Year.
PAY IT OFF (See! I didn't make this one up!). Settle any outstanding debts you have, particularly with friends.
ATTRACT LUCK WITH DISPLAYS. Place five (5) varieties of fruits (pineapples are particularly good) on your table during Chinese New Year, then share it with your family on the next day. Also, a vase full of fresh flowers and a dish full of nuts or sweet candies can help attract luck.
GET RID OF CHIMES IN YOUR HOME. Chimes attract spirits; what kind they attract, you cannot control. (Barbara? Chelsea? Is that you?)

Among the most powerful things you can give, and still keep, are your word,
your smile, and a grateful heart. Be grateful. Gratitude multiplies joy.
